14th Page, I Can Go On Forever!

"Epigone" is a point of curiosity. I pronounce it erroneously(though intentional) as eh-pig-ohn-ee, as opposed to epp-e-gohn or epp-ee-gone. This is sheerly phonoaesthetic, but it's pretty much set in stone for me. I do a similar thing with "mythopoeic"(instead of myth-o-pee-ick, I do myth-o-poe-A-ick), which is actually inculcated from my reading the word in Lolita(and learning it then) and mispronouncing it, but I think it's prettier that way. You'll also note a lot of in here used by Nabokov(some incidental and some not), though I specifically avoided "nymphet"(though, I should add it now) because my list of Coolest Words(30 pages so far) has some coinages, and there are some others on Prettiest("mimsy" q.v.). Their frontwoman maintains this definition and this is the only one that I could fact-check in a reasonable period of time. I found out about it from some avenue a long time ago, but not the Cocteau Twins, found them about 3 years ago(think I was searching for the definition, actually). Anyway, that's the sort of point that I'm clarifying and hitherto, it'll just be that way. (Despite the fact that I can't rationalize the etymology of it).

Someone Read Atlas Shrugged and Decided to Rexhuminate it and Dole it out to the General Public

Link if the above doesn't work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6W07bFa4TzM

Look, I don't care whether you are some ardent acolyte of Objectivism(randroid is the colloquial/pejorative term) or if you're some dilatory bastard whittling your hours on some useless lambaste of it(indefatigable genius/"free thinker"), there are some immutable laws of human society and culture. One, you don't create a movie based on a large slab of tepid fiction unless it is capable of being formed into a potentially lucrative and entertaining interpretation or elaboration of it. Two, you don't slap a "part 1" onto something unless you have developed a serious cinematographic arrogance of Tarintinoesque levels. Three, don't expect to have such a meteoric impact as to change lives with a recycled philosophy that's been on the table for 50 years unless you have something to contribute to it, show in a contextual or culturally relevant manner, or give it a bold re-imagination or gritty reboot. Fourth, if you are so intent on capitalizing(get it?) on such a monolithic blockbuster, you should attempt to hire some creative, well-known celebrity behemoths to usher in a new era of cinematic hegemony.

This movie promises to be a drawling, pseudo-intellectual, pretentious jaunt into the psyche of a sadomasochistic luminary(who can only live his life on the edge) who decided that in a two minute trailer, he could compound the worst elements of 2012, Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Atlas Shrugged, Jaws(if he is truly a genius, this could make the movie an interesting pastiche/homage, you know, a giant shark that believes in the virtue of selfishness), and nigh soap opera acting with the resplendent plumage that only a C-list(or D-list if you feel dangerously accurate, I am pretty sure Rorschach is trying to kill the black Mormon from House) can effectively strut. Applaud this bold visionary, because his brainchild is likely going to do well financially, captivate or earn censure of critics(either of which garners it cult status anyway), and that patronizing is actually counter-intuitive to the philosophy anent the book in the first place. gg

Page 3, I Shall Write No More, Forever.

The list tops at about 900 or so, with one word comprising one line(with accompanying, though brief, definition) coming in at 19 pages, it may be of interests to those clamoring for word lists and aren't impressed by the pussy word-lists that crop up all over any wannabe-philologist's Google searches. Eh well, it'll prolly be up starting tomorrow.

Black Kids, Back of the Bus Jams

Finally listened to the entirety of Partie Traumatic by Black Kids, an indie synthpop band. Album is evocative of The Killers, Bloc Party, The Cure, a few New Wave bands, and at times, it has the brio of of Montreal in their more hyper songs. Lyrics are predictably meh, but the haughty girl back-up(which is almost like B-52s) makes it seem nearly tongue-in-cheek. The party riffs and synth is either frenetic or appropriately timed, and always elemental to the genre. You can sing along to most of the album without blistering your ears(also rife with great driving songs). Notable inclusions are "Hit the Heartbrakes"(my favorite track), "Look at Me When I Rock With You"(arguably the most Killers inspired), and "Listen to Your Body Tonight"(just a great track to dance to). Virtually every song can merit, and at the very least, take three minutes and listen to their hit "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You".

Verdict:8/10
Not a perfect album, with only ten tracks, though all are worth listening to, and I'm fairly capricious when it comes to music. The synth fluidly enmeshes with the antic guitar with a guv's accent akin to Bloc Party(Black Kids have a better singer, I think). The album shines with an eclectic, burnished, and interesting tone. Definitely deserves a spot in your collection if you're a fan of synthpop.

Intro and Whatnot

I'm Sesquipedaedalus (I should probably find a easier and shorter moniker) and this is my new blog. It's devoted to investigating pop culture, words, linguistics, video games, movies, etc. It'll likely be pretty barren for a while, considering I need to amp up the motivation to continually update it.
